One of the most exciting recent developments at Bridge Between the Worlds is the addition of Frequency Specific Microcurrent as a treatment methodology. While nothing can replace the human interaction and natural energy work that have created the core of Margaretta’s mission, FSM introduces a level of technology which supplements and supports healing. After working with Margaretta as a client, Jon Graznak became intrigued with the process and started an intense study of the process and has begun to work at Bridge Between the Worlds with Maggie to facilitate and develop these new techniques.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent uses microamperage (millionths of an amp) current to create a resonance effect targeting specific conditions and tissues. Much in the same manner that the vibrations of a violin string or tuning fork can make other nearby objects vibrate to the same note, the FSM equipment uses electricity to create vibrations in a specific and tightly controlled range of frequencies. FSM operates at the level of current that cells themselves generate. It is well below the range that our sensory nerves alone can detect. (If our bodies were able to perceive cellular current levels we would “feel” all of our nerves firing continuously…interesting in theory, but likely fairly distracting in practice.) FSM is delivered through conductive gloves during a hands-on session or with conductive pads for more general application.

In the early 1900’s, Physicians and Osteopaths used electromagnetic therapy devices to treat patients. Their equipment delivered frequencies on two channels, one to address a specific tissue; and one to neutralize a specific condition or pathology. Thousands of physicians used the technology during this time, treating patients, researching and sharing the effects of frequencies in articles and books. In 1934, the American Medical Association declared that electromagnetic therapies were “unscientific” and that drugs and surgery were the future of medicine. Physicians using electromagnetic therapies were threatened with the loss of their licenses which, at that time, were granted by the AMA .

Microcurrent began to return to use in the 1980’s by physicians in Europe and the US; first for stimulating acupuncture points, promoting healing in injured athletes and hastening bone repair in non-union fractures. In 1994, Carolyn McMakin, DC and George Douglas, DC began using frequencies obtained from Dr. Harry Van Gelder, a retired osteopath, on Dr. McMakin’s chiropractic patients. The results were immediate and fascinating. The frequencies appeared to do exactly what they were alleged to do. Further use of the frequencies demonstrated effects that included changes in inflammation, range of motion, nerve and muscle pain, shingles pain, visceral organ function and even emotional states in response to frequencies. Later frequencies were added from the writings of Dr. Albert Abrams and from Dr. McWilliams.

There are FDA restrictions on what we can say, report or claim as an effect of the use of microcurrent as a device for the treatment of any condition other than a general "treatment of pain" statement. This doesn't change what we can do; it changes what we can say about what we can do.

All references to clinical effects other than simple pain control refer to frequency resonance effects not the effects of microcurrent. FSM has changed what is possible in pain management. FSM can treat chronic myofascial pain quickly, easily and comfortably. Nerve pain from nerve traction injuries, disc bulges and herniations and herpes and shingles have been treated successfully by FSM practitioners. There are protocols for kidney stone pain, disc and facet joint generated pain that give rapid and often lasting relief. The protocol for fibromyalgia associated with neck trauma offers pain relief, unprecedented changes in inflammatory cytokines and hope for the 2 million patients who suffer from this condition.

While there are never any promises with medical procedures, Frequency Specific Microcurrent offers hope. The sign on the wall in Dr. McMakin’s clinic says: "Be realistic; expect a miracle. But be patient-the impossible takes slightly longer than the difficult."
